What would be a negative, though? It can be the one thing that you were attempting to conceal when you created the fake account. What if, one of those thousands of followers actually found out who the person behind the mask really was? Even worse what if they attempted to expose you and force you to reveal your true identity which could possibly shake your very existence (or at least your online existence). This brings about the idea of and trolling in what seems like no matter how honest and genuine an opinion was expressed it is aggressively opposed by an onslaught of unmerciful cyber bullies. Is the opposition trying to destroy your belief or idea or is it possible you truly are the only one who shares that view? It can even be looked at in another sense. What if, after so long of hiding behind this alternate personality, the user feels truly empowered and ready to break out of his shell. The online existence played the role of a sort of gym where he worked out and trained with hopes to finally be ready to let the world witness his deeper feelings and opinions. The online society can seem daunting and massive at times, but as in times of the past where explorers searched for new lands, and ways to build up society, and meet new people we can consider the internet as the New World, per se. Set your ship assail and harness your courage to be heard amongst the sea of personalities. There is only one you, and now more than ever you can connect with others just like you.
The social media age has brought along with it a new sense of bravery in our information driven civilization. People who were normally anxious in crowded settings or shy at first meetings are able to express themselves freely on those follow based applications such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, & of course even Facebook. It can be taken a step further by the user not even using their true identity but instead a created fictional character. We see it often on Twitter, The parody accounts of celebrities, cartoon characters, & even figures that have passed away years ago all have a way to engage with the masses through the popular social sites. Now a user who is uncomfortable expressing their unique opinions and views can easily adopt a new "self" and begin to speak what is really on their mind! What kind of effect can this have on not only the user, but the individuals who come across and interact with the phony account? The situation may cause both positive and adverse outcomes. Being able to express yourself without fear of backlash from peers or family can be a liberating experience. The false Identity acts as a mask the user can hide behind and give their unfiltered viewpoint while still being able to see how others respond. After a certain amount of time, the feeling of confidence may spark an inner flame that helps the timid user become comfortable enough to perhaps stand behind their opinions and voice without the costume. This could be an exciting moment. Finally being able to connect with people you didn’t realize could have the same viewpoint as you, and then coming to find out that there are so many more people who share in those experiences that you have laid out.
